YOUNG CAMEROONIAN FARMERS.
TERRA NOUN, KOUTABA, CAMEROON
As in many of the places we visited, the yield per coffee tree is extremely low. This may be due to a lack of proper maintenance, or to trees accustomed to producing only with chemical inputs.
The young farmers of the Terra Noun cooperative want to revive organic farming on their plots. The cultivation of several types of production is planned. These include plantains, avocado, mango and other citrus trees that perform well with coffee, as well as corn, beans, tomatoes, chillies and peppers, among many others. Trees whose wood will be used for other purposes are also planted.
As coffee-growing populations are ageing, school plantations and "one elder/one young person" collaborations are being set up, with the aim of perpetuating ancestral knowledge. The aim of the school plantations is to test farming techniques and make land available for training younger farmers.
The cooperative also encourages children to enjoy school by organizing reward days for participants. Special consideration is given to girls.
In addition to that, the cooperative tries to valorize women's work by integrating them in the decision-making process. Systems are experimented to facilitate the sale of their products to town.
Many stories and anecdotes rely in the book Book One Hectare of Coffee.
